The project brings together the history of the Antalya Kaleiçi houses—hidden behind bougainvillea-covered windows, opening onto narrow streets, and filled with stories in their spacious courtyards. Archives were examined, clues were followed through old photographs, former and current homeowners were located, and interviews were conducted with Kaleiçi residents. Their stories were compiled, revealing a history stretching back many years.
Among the standout stories in this documentary series are those of Captain Hassun’s mansion, built in 1875 by Italian and Turkish masters and known for introducing dates to Antalya; the home of Count Salih, who served as the neighborhood headman for 40 years; the house of Ayşe and Derviş Kulaksızlar, who arrived during the population exchange; and Paşalar Mansion, purchased by Mustafa Paşa Akdemir—who worked as a municipal police officer for Antalya Municipality—from a Cretan family.
With the completion of its three phases, the project has documented the histories of 61 buildings in Kaleiçi through a documentary series available in four languages. The documentaries can be accessed by scanning QR codes placed at the entrances of the buildings with a mobile phone.
This remarkable work by Muratpaşa Municipality was honored with the Tourism Design Award during the Antalya Tourism Fair (ATF25 Türkiye), held at ANFAŞ EXPO Center between October 22–24. The award was presented at a ceremony organized as part of the fair.
